Sussex Police understands the importance of treating people fairly and with respect.

HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service's (HMICFRS) latest inspection has again assessed the force as 'good'.

The legitimacy inspection looked at internal and external measures including whether we treated people with fairness and respect, how we ensure everyone behaves ethically and lawfully, and whether our workforce is treated with fairness and respect.

Deputy Chief Constable Bernie O'Reilly, commenting on the legitimacy report said: "I'm pleased the report highlights officers and staff understand the importance of treating all people they serve with fairness and respect.

"It is vital that people have trust and confidence in the integrity of police officers, staff and volunteers, who show their commitment in addressing the concerns of the communities we serve every single day.

"I am delighted that the hard work and commitment of our officers and staff have been recognised in respect of our dealings with the public. We're constantly trying to be the very best we can be and are never complacent. We take the finding seriously and will address any recommendations raised."

Commenting on the Force’s assessment by HMICFRS, Katy Bourne, the county’s Police & Crime Commissioner said: “‘Policing by consent’ forms the bedrock of British policing. To achieve this support, the public has to believe that the police will treat them fairly and with respect.

“So I am pleased that Sussex Police has been independently recognised as being ‘Good’ at how legitimately it keeps people safe and reduces crime.

“HMICFRS has deemed that the Force’s use of stop and search does require some improvement and I will continue to closely scrutinise and monitor this on behalf of local residents through my regular performance and accountability meetings with the Chief Constable.”
